River Banks Wedding
Celebrate Your Love at New Zealand’s Natural Treasures
In New Zealand, couples have the freedom to marry almost anywhere that inspires them or holds special meaning for their union. A riverbank, for example, can symbolize a fresh start — flowing continuously from the moment you first connect into a future full of excitement and adventure.
For lovers of nature and heritage, the Riwaka Resurgence is one of the most breathtaking river locations you could choose. Steeped in Māori history, it tells a story as rich and enduring as your love. Walking through the intricately carved Māori archway, the air feels crisp, clean, and just a little chilly — as if stepping into a hidden fairyland. Friendly fantails flit about, and the approachable white-chested kiwi robin seems to welcome you to this magical place.
The ceremony takes place simply at the water’s edge, accompanied by the gentle sound of cascading water and the hum of wild bees. No elaborate décor is needed — nature itself provides the beauty and serenity. Yet, a beautifully crafted celebration picnic and a glass of sparkling wine can make the moment even more memorable.
Please note that there are restrictions if you plan to celebrate here; your event organiser will need to secure the Department of Conservation permits for this stunning location. However, you can engage a consultant and celebrant such as myself. There are Māori traditions and a place of special Māori traditions. The ceremony can not take place at the source of the river, but on the riverbank further down. These are the details I am seasoned in and can help with advice.

About the Author Terri Everett Terri Everett built her reputation as an elopement specialist after visiting New Zealand in 1995 on her honeymoon from the UK. Later returning to live and build a business with her husband and two children.
Together they operated a commercial scenic boat charter, Sealimousines, in the Abel Tasman. It was during this time that the demand for wedding transport in such an incredible location became popular, and the rest is history.
Terri continued to evolve the business, now named The Dream Maker, by one of her brides in 2011. Her service covers the most epic wilderness across the top of the South Island and, by demand, opens up into new locations throughout New Zealand.
Terri was awarded “Most Unique Wedding Experience in New Zealand 2019.
Terri and her husband Jim are now proud owners of Hidden Valley Farm on Takaka Hill above the Riwaka Resurgence. A cave system called “Perserverance” starts on the farm. There are two cosy camping huts on the farm for couples to enjoy, if that is their style or budget. The ceremonies happen in the Hidden Valley.
