Ngarua Caves & Takaka Hill

Alpine Adventure Meets Timeless Beauty

The Ngarua Caves and Takaka Hill offer a historic series of limestone caves nestled in the southern reaches of the Abel Tasman National Park. Situated near the summit of Takaka Hill, adjacent to State Highway 60 as it winds between Motueka and Upper Takaka, this location combines alpine scenery with coastal panoramas.

From the black limestone outcrops, couples are treated to breathtaking vistas of the Tasman Sea and Abel Tasman coastline on clear days. The surrounding terrain — native bush, tussock grasses, and alpine landscapes — creates a stunning natural backdrop for photography and ceremonies.

The caves themselves are privately owned but open to the public, featuring historic walkways and old wooden steps that add character and a sense of timeless adventure. Discreet lighting guides you through ancient corridors that open into glistening amphitheaters and cathedral-like spaces, where stalagmites and stalactites frame your ceremony with natural grandeur and incredible acoustics. This is truly an “old meets new” experience.

For intimate weddings and elopements, we book early evening events with exclusive access to the caves. After your ceremony, a celebration picnic awaits at the topside, perfect for sunset photography and private moments together.

For those seeking added adventure, a helicopter charter can provide a private scenic flight to the caves, with the option of a second landing if desired (POA).

Recommended Upgrades: Hair & makeup, styling, photography and videography, accommodation (Plan B), and any additional add-ons — all subject to availability and charges.

Access: Easily reached by road, or for a truly epic experience, opt for a helicopter charter.
